Distance per day:
Between approximately 60 and 80 km.
Programme per day:
• Day 1, a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, preparations.
On the first day, participants will meet in the afternoon at a lodging in the south of Friesland. The guesthouses are a couple of kilometres from the IJsselmeer lake and close to two attractions, namely the old Zuider Zee fishing harbour of Laaksum and the Rode Klif [Red Cliff], which offers wonderful views of the land and the sea. The monument there is a reminder of the famous battle near Warns in 1345, where the Dutch tried to conquer Friesland. Count Willem IV of Holland died during the battle. You first full day of cycling (towards Franeker) will start the following day, once you have been properly equipped and provided with all the necessary information.
• Day 2, to Franeker.
You will cycle from Warns or Koudum via the IJsselmeer coastal towns of Stavoren, Hindeloopen and Workum to Bolsward. From there, the route passes through the charming Wadden Sea harbour town of Harlingen to the old university town of Franeker. There you will spend in the night in the authentic Stadsherberg [town inn] or at the equally traditional Oppe Klincke farm. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium and plenty of excellent restaurants are nearby. We recommend that you take time to walk through the historic centre and visit the oldest student pub in the Netherlands, known as the Bogt fen Guné.
• Day 3, to Leeuwarden and surroundings.
Your journey of discovery continues along the Wadden Sea coast towards Dokkum, once a seaport and now the 'capital' of Lauwersland. Do not forget to 'climb' the tallest terp [knoll] in Friesland (almost 9 m), known as Hegebeintum and to go on a guided tour of the 12th century church and hear its story. You will then cycle via the Dokkumer Ee, Bartlehiem where the Elfstedentocht [Eleven City Skating Race] finishes, the Bonkevaart and on to the very attractive city of Leeuwarden. You should definitely visit the charming centre of the Frisian capital which has a wealth of monuments and museums. Do not forget to visit the nostalgic shops in the Nieuwesteeg. You will stay the night in or nearby Leeuwarden.
• Day 4, to Southwest Friesland.
Your journey continues in a southerly direction through the expanse of pastures and terpen to the water gate town of Sneek. From Sneek you travel to the small fortified town of Sloten, the smallest of the towns on the Elfsteden route and indeed the smallest in the world (surf to www.elfstedenroute.nl). You will spend the night at a lodging in Southwest Friesland.
• Day 5, to the finish.
This delightfully varied tour ends on day 5. You cycle through the Gaasterlandse woods and back to the lodgings the tour started from in the south of Friesland.
Extra night:
If you no longer fancy driving home at the end of the final day, day 5, you can always spend an extra night at the lodgings the tour started from. This extra night can be arranged when you book! The costs are 42 euro per person per night incl. a hearty breakfast on the basis of two people in a room.

The launch
An Elfsteden launch is a luxury open launch with steering position, sprayhood (cabriolet cover above the front seats) and storage compartments. It is not a good idea to have suitcases on board a launch so try to bring bags instead because they will fit better in the storage compartments. The Elfsteden launches are a minimum of 5 m and a maximum of 7.25 m long. They are between 2.30 and 2.66 m wide. They have a draught of between 50 and 70 cm and their vertical clearance is between 90 and 1.65 cm.
Standard types: Maril 570, River Cruise 23, Weco 635.
Sailing schedule and route
You will receive these after you have booked, in combination with a route book.
Brief information on the deal

Vertical clearance of the route to Hindeloopen: 2.50 m.
Harbours, landing stages
En route you will find landing stages and marinas everywhere, for example the free landing places of the intermunicipal organisation Marrekrite. These are all indicated on the Friesland waterways map. When staying the night you can tie up in front of, or near, the hotel in the village or town centre. You will then pay harbour dues to the municipal harbour master. Guests do not have to pay harbour dues at some hotels. This will be stated on your guest information form which you will receive after you have booked.
Friesland Holland Assistance
If you breakdown en route, there is no need to panic because help from Friesland Holland Assistance is available in no time! You will be given the telephone number when you book.
Sailing means taking it easy
You do not need to have a navigation licence to sail an Elfsteden launch. If it is your first time, you will be given all the necessary instructions. Any landlubber with a slight feeling for the water will have no trouble navigating all the lakes and waterways in this easy to operate launch. You just need to take your time and make sure you enjoy the experience.
Immediate pleasure
As soon as you leave the harbour you will start to enjoy the unique countryside, culture and easygoing atmosphere that Friesland has to offer. Your trip will take you via winding streams through all manner of charming waterside villages. You will have plenty of time to explore the famous Frisian Eleven Cities. Although they are referred to as cities they are in fact small towns with a wealth of history and places of interest. The excellent Friesland Holland waterways maps and brochures guide you along the way.

Friesland
has acquired a new, lengthy tourist route, referred to as
the Romantic Route. Whereas the Elfsteden [Eleven City] route
passes mainly through the towns and lakes in the west of the
province, the Romantic Route leads you through the woods and
the tree-lined landscape in the east, better known as the
‘ Friese Wouden’. It takes in a mix of landscapes
which are typical of the provinces of Drenthe and Friesland.
Once barren, the area is now rich in park-like landscapes
which is a great setting in which to live and spend leisure
time.
The Romantic Route can be completed by bicycle, car, motorbike
or coach. There is also a sailing route suitable for low-lying
motor yachts with berths and launches with which you can travel
from one hotel to the next.
 |
Cycling
in the Friese Wouden
The
cycling route is 400 km long and is divided into a northern
and a southern half, with each covering a distance of 200
km. These routes start and finish at one and the same location.
As in the case of the tour via the eleven cities, the Friesland
Holland tourist office, whose staff also designed the route,
offers numerous deals with some including luggage transport
and a breakdown service. The route passes by attractive places
to stay, historic settlements, museums where the activities
of yesteryear are brought back to life, places of interest,
nostalgic shops, old crafts and farms. You cycle along sheltered
paths and avenues through an uncommonly beautiful park and
water landscape featuring lots of picturesque towns and villages,
nature reserves and grasslands criss-crossed by streams and
rivers, divided up into sections by rows of trees. A typical
feature of the park and water landscape in east Friesland
is its natural beauty and peace and quiet. There is plenty
of greenery in the form of woods and grasslands, cosy cottages
and villages, small-scale leisure and farming activities,
horses and cows in the meadows. A feeling of warmth extends
from the region and its residents. You feel immediately at
home and almost forget you are a tourist!

Welcome
to the Netherlands, welcome to Fryslân!
Friesland
(know in Frisian and officially as Fryslân) is one of
the 12 provinces of the Netherlands and has already existed
for more than 2000 years. The Romans were the first tourists
and were extremely impressed by what they found... as you
will be too! Over the centuries, Friesland has developed into
a unique area of the Netherlands.
Nowhere
else will you find such a wide variety of landscapes, cultural
history and leisure opportunities in a single region measuring
just 100 km across. These include:
An extensive system
of waterways that links
all the lakes and historical locations.
Four sailing and
fishing areas: inland waterways,
the IJsselmeer, the Wadden Sea and the North Sea.
The largest fleet
in Europe: traditional sailing ships,
(motor) yachts, open motorboats, open sailing boats,
fishing boats and ships designed for cruises and sea fishing.
Separate roads
and paths for cyclists and motorised traffic.
Perfect signposting.
Islands in the
North Sea with huge beaches.
All manner of active
and passive leisure activities on land
and water, even during the winter!
Exceptional indoor
attractions throughout the entire region.
Not only water
but a great deal of green spaces such as
pastures, forests (in the south) and nature reserves.
Clean air brought
in from the sea.
Environmentally-friendly
business,
intensive care for the environment.
A great deal of
respect for the regions own language,

The Friesland Holland Tourist Information
& Travel Service: the guide
This website, which is published by the Friesland Holland
Tourist Information & Travel Service, shows you the way
to well over 500 places of interest and attractions, leisure
companies, hotels and restaurants. This website includes a
wealth of information on companies involved in tourism. By
using the www.frieslandholland.nl super site and
the 100 or so special sites you can quickly make
the right choice from the enormous range on offer.
Book directly and save money
In the first instance, Friesland Holland encourages people
to book directly and thereby save money. In addition, the
company offers unique holiday packages lasting several days,
plus trips organised by a number of Friesland Holland partners
together. The focus in the case of these all-inclusive full-service
holidays is on offering a very wide range of services such
as a breakdown assistance and luggage forwarding in the case
of the Elfstedentochten (11 city cycling tours).
Whether you visit the mainland or the islands, I would like
to wish you a pleasant holiday!
Yours sincerely,Albert Hendriks,
Director Friesland Holland Tourist
Information & Travel Service
